England soccer stars clinched victory in the British home international championship with a 3-1 humbling of Scotland at Wembley today (Saturday). Though England have been criticised for lack of scoring initiative in their last two outings, it took them only nine minutes to get the ball into the net against Scotland. Peters was the scorer from a corner.
Within two minutes, Scotland drew level through Curran. Chivers rounded off a memorable first half with two further goals for England. There was no further scoring after the interval.
SYNOPSIS: England kick off in their international with Scotland on Saturday. A hundred-thousand fans packed Wembley despite recent criticism of both teams.
Ball takes an England corner. Chivers heads down the centre and Peters scores. Only nine minutes have gone--and England looked set to answer criticism that they have lost the scoring touch.
Two minutes later, an England defensive muddle lets in Curran to equalise for Scotland--a goal celebrated in traditional Scottish manner both on and of the field....
England raised their game and on the half hour a fierce shot from Chivers regained them the lead.
Three minutes from the interval, Chivers cracks his second goal to give England a three-one half-time lead.
Scotland kick off in the second half. During the next forty-five minutes, the Scots were to tighten up their game, especially in defence.
But England goalkeeper Gordon Banks and his defenders were by now supremely confident. And the attack still carved out chances. Here it's Peters going close. But despite the near misses, there was no further scoring and the win gave England victory in the British home soccer championship.
