  • Description

Delegates from the three member states of the Organisation for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) -- Mauritania, Mali and Senegal -- gathered recently in Bamako, capital of Mali, to clarify the aims of the Organisation.

The Organisation was set up in March, 1972, to co-ordinate work on the development of the Senegal River Basin. Since then its projects have been rather overshadowed by the urgent measures needed to relieve the drought in the southern Sahel region. But the delegates agreed that the Organisation could greatly increase the prosperity of the region, once the immediate problems of the drought had been overcome.

Among those attending were the Organisation's General Secretary M. Ould Amar, and the Mali Minister of Energy, M. Lamine Keita.
