  • Description

Armed police and troops patrolled Mar del Plata in strength on Wednesday (14 June), as Argentina's major resort was brought to a standstill by a general strike. The one-day stoppage had been called by the powerful General Confederation of Labour to protest against alleged police repression of students.

Public transport stopped running for the day many shops and business remained shut. Outside the University -- plastered with anti-police slogans by the students -- security forces mounted a strong guard.

There were isolated clashes between demonstrators and police, and at the end of the day the Army announced that 110 people had been arrested. But there was no violence on the scale of a similar protest three weeks ago, when over 1500 people were arrested.
