Yves Saint Laurent, considered by many fashion experts to be the most influential designer in Paris, presented his "Rive Gauche" collection of Autumn and Winter creations on Friday (April 21). Abandoning the 1940s look he adopted last year, Saint Laurent has been busy updating classic designs, with the accent on separates, figure-hugging sweaters, battle-jackets and wide-shouldered coats. One of the biggest surprises in the collection was a wedding outfit in black velvet with a fur trimming.
SYNOPSIS: In Paris, a study in contrasts from top designer Yves Saint Laurent. A wedding outfit in black velvet, trimmed with fur, was the surprise of a collection that returned to classical designs. The craze for 1940s styles adopted last year, has now largely been abandoned.
Daytime fashions are based principally on floppy-legged trousers, often in checks and tartans, and worn with figure-hugging sweaters and battle-jackets.
This "Rive Gauche" collection puts a strong emphasis on separates. Colour combinations are subdued for day-wear: soft browns, greens and plum shades predominate. But evening dresses feature colourful and vivid prints.
Leather makes an impact for coats in the Saint Laurent collection. Harlequin diamond prints show the influence of the Italian Commedia dell 'Arte. For head-wear, the emphasis is on small cloche hats, made of felt, and worn with the brim tipped back. Shoes for the entire collection are four-inch high spectator pumps set on a half-inch platform sole.
