  • Description

MORE THAN 1,000 PEOPLE ARE HOMELESS IN SINGAPORE FOLLOWING A FIRE WHICH RAZED A SQUATTER COLONY TO THE GROUND ON SATURDAY (MARCH 4). THE WOODEN HUTS BURNED FOR FIVE HOURS BEFORE FIREMEN BROUGHT THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL.

THE COLONY IS NEAR THE SOUTHERN TIP OF SINGAPORE ISLAND. NEARLY 100 FIREMEN INCLUDING VOLUNTEERS FOUGHT THE FIRE AS THE SQUATTERS GRABBED WHAT THEY COULD AND FLED.

THREE PEOPLE WERE TREATED IN HOSPITAL FOR BURNS AND 17 OTHERS RECEIVED FIRST-AID TREATMENT ON THE SPOT. ONE FIREMAN RECEIVED A BROKEN LEG.

DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT GBP70,000 (STERLING). THE CAUSE HAS NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED.

THE FIRE STARTED AS PEOPLE WERE EATING THEIR EVENING MEAL. BY THE TIME SEVEN FIRE APPLIANCES ARRIVED A LARGE SECTION OF THE COLONY WAS ALREADY GUTTED.

THE SQUATTERS ARE NOW HOUSED AT NEARBY COMMUNITY CENTRES AND SCHOOLS. THEY'VE BEEN GIVEN MONEY BY THE GOVERNMENT WELFARE DEPARTMENT AND REGISTERED FOR ACCOMODATION IN GOVERNMENT-BUILT HOUSES. MOST OF THE SQUATTERS ARE CHINESE WITH SOME MALAYS.

SINGAPORE, THOUGH A MODERN CITY, HAS MANY SUCH SQUATTER COLONIES, AND IT'S ESTIMATED THAT ONE-EIGHTH OF THE ISLAND'S POPULATION LIVE IN THE WOODEN HUTS.
