    Police stopped a car at red traffic lights in Paris tonight (Monday) and found 105 LB (47.5kg) of heroin. Police of four countries cooperated in the discovery of the heroin, which is worth GBP8 million in the American illicit market. A man and woman were arrested.

    French police followed the car, a Citroen 8 with an English registration number, until the outskirts of Paris, After stopping the car, police found about 13 Lb (6kg) of heroin under a metal plate soldered beneath the engine.

    The rest was discovered when the car was completely dismantled. Paris police are holding Jean Breuil, 38, a French company director, who lived in Biarritz, and his friend, Marie-France Fernandez, 28, a teacher.

    Since the collaboration of the French and American drug squads increased recently, there has been a dramatic increase in the seizure of illegal drugs. In France, since the 1st August 1969, 499 drug smugglers have been arrested and 214 have been convicted.
