  • Description

The Ogavaa people of Central Ghana have been gathering for their annual Fatu Afahye Festival in which they offer thanks to the gods of the land and welcome in the harvest season. On Saturday (September 1st) seven groups known as Asafo companies of the Oguaas marched through Cape Coast in their festival apparel, to the accompaniment of singing, drumming and musket-fire.

Individual performed dances with the colours of their Company. The leaders - the Asefohenfos and Asafohemas - carried the insignia of their office.

The festival provides a chance for separated kinamen to meet again and pay homage to dead relatives. At the end of the procession, the Paramount Chief called upon the Oguaa people to develop the region as best as they could.

But one of the most important parts of this festival, is the offering of prayers to the Sea-God - Bosompo Mensa - and to Mother-Earth - Assase-Efua. Last year their prayers were answered with a record herring catch.
