  • Description

Visnews filmed the aftermath of the severe earthquake which rocked the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete on May 14. Thousands of people were made homeless as the earthtremor destroyed their homes or made them too dangerous to live in. Large numbers of people were evacuated to tent cities erected by the Army and Welfare Organisations in various areas.

There were no casualties since a minor tremor which preceded the main earthquake caused the population to flee from their homes into the open.

The Greek Minister of Housing, Mr. Kefaloyiannis, estimates the damage at about GBP500,000.

The world Council of Churches is among the relief organizations which rushed to the aid of the stricken island. The Archbishop of Crete visited the worst hit areas and watched the Greek Army pull down damaged houses in the village of Pitsidia.
