  • Description

An economic delegation from the United Arab Emirates arrived in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on Monday (17 December) bearing a special message for President Kenneth Kaunda.

The delegation, led by Mr. Ahmed Bin Sultan Bin Salim, Minister of State in Charge of Finance and Economic Affairs, was believed to be holding discussions with Zambian officials on the effects of oil price rises by the Arab producers, and the effects of the oil cut-backs to nations seen as favouring Israel.

Lusaka broke off diplomatic relations with Israel during the latest Arab-Israel conflict and there have been official assurances in Zambia that the country is in no immediate danger of an oil shortage.

But a new round of Arab oil price increases are expected before the end of the year and developing nations could be hard hit.

Representatives of some developing countries have asked the Arab producers to consider a two-tier price structure, with one price for rich developed countries and a much lower one for the poorer developing countries.

At a press conference in Zambia Mr. Ahmed Mukhta, adviser to the U.A.E. Foreign Ministry announced n Afre-Arab Committee is being formed to see that African countries suffer no bad effects from the Arab oil embargo. The delegation has already visited Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania and will go on to Uganda and Zaire.
