Background: Malaysia has a new king and queen. They were crowned in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday at a ceremony full of ancient Malay court tradition. The new King, Sultan Halim, at once proclaimed an end to the state of emergency which had been in effect for nearly two years.
In one respect, the coronation was unique. The Malaysian ruler is the only King in the world who is democratically elected -- voted to the throne by Malaysian state rulers for a five-year term. Yoong Ping Lam was there to cover the ceremony for Visnews.
