  • Description

Ricardo Patresse of Italy has won the Macao Grand Prix at first attempt. Driving a Chevron he survived a first lap collision with Australian Alan Jones to win Sunday's race (November 20) ahead of New Zealander Steve Millen and Andrew Medicke of Australia.

SYNOPSIS: It was the 24th running of the race in the 400-year-old Portuguese colony, and it proved to be one of the most exciting Grands Prix Macao has seen.

There was incident and excitement from the start, and from the grid the pace was really hot.

Before the start Alan Jones, the winner of this year's Austrian Grand Prix, was among the favourites, but his hopes of another big race success were soon shattered. He hit a wall on a bend and was forced to retire. And the incident almost put Ricardo Patresse out of the race as well.

The bump with Jones forced Patresse into the pits to change his cars nose cone, but despite a damaged wheel, he soon rejoined the race and went after the leaders. The pace was really hotting up and six more drivers crashed, but fortunately there were no casualties.

Patresse took the flag after a magnificent chase. He regained the lead in the 15th lap and drove superbly to stay there.

Patresse's time for the 152 mile course (243 kilometres) was one hour 40 minutes 14 point 48 seconds.
