  • Description

Israeli Defence Minister Shimon Peres visited Bedou tribesmen in the Israeli-occupied Sinai desert on Tuesday (8 April) to explain his Government's compensation plans for land expropriated by the Israelis.

The Israelis have wired-off the land traditionally used by the wandering Bedou to make more terrain available for a new town they are building there, called Yamit.

The Bedou were given no opportunity to protest, but were offered compensation ranging from monetary payments to new concrete homes built for them in the area.

The plan earmarked land for about 120 families with running water laid on. About 500 families did not want to accept plots for individual cultivation.....they received cash compensation.
