  • Description

The Heads of State of Venezuela and Brazil met in the Venezuelan border town of Santo Elena de Uairan on Tuesday (20 February) to sign a joint declaration of agreement on clear economic, cultural an scientific ties between two countries.

President Rafael Caldera, of Venezuela, and President Garrastazu Medici, of Brazil, also took part in a ceremony inaugurating a stretch of the Trasamazon highway that will eventually link the two countries.

They jointly unveiled a monument to South American liberator Simon Bolivar in the main square of the jungle town.

The two leaders held five hours of private talks at the Capuchine Mission, before signing the declaration that covers 27 points of co-operation.

The two presidents pointed out that trade between the two countries was increasing, and they pledged to promote an aerial transport agreement.

The declaration urges that Latin American countries should assume more and more an international posture equivalent to the area's vast potential in human and natural resources.

Until recently, Santa Elena had limited contact with the rest of Venezuela and with Brazil across the border, much of its transportation being by air.

To mark the occasion, President Caldera presented President Medici with Venezuela's highest decoration, the "collar del Libertador". President Medici, in turn, presented President Caldera with Brazil's national Order of the Southern Cross.
