  • Description

An Israeli Embassy official - Dr. Ami Sachori - died today (Tuesday) when a bulky, booby-trapped envelope exploded in his hands. The letter, posted in Amsterdam, had slipped through the Embassy security checks and reached Dr. Sachori - to whom it was personally addressed. He died of stomach and chest wounds as he was being taken to hospital.

Dr. Sachori, a 40-year-old Agricultural Attache, had served in London for four years and was due to return home to Israel next week. He was married, with two children.

Embassy sources have reported that the letter probably got through because it was among a large accumulation of mail which had piled up during Yom Kippur - the Holy Jewish Day of Atonement.

Three more bomb-letters were later reported to have been found among the Embassy mail - one of them addressed to Ambassador Michael Comay. The other two were addressed to senior Embassy officials. One of them was also said to contain a note signed by the Arab guerrilla organisation "Black September", saying "We shall kill you wherever you are." The Black September group also claimed responsibility for the Munich killings of Israeli Olympic athletes.

Also injured in the blast that killed Dr. Sachori, Mr. Theodore Kadoar - who has been in London for about a month to take over duties from Dr. Sachori. He was slightly injured, mainly by the noise which deafened him.

There are about 100 people - 24 of them diplomats - working in the Embassy. Officials have indicated that security precautions - already tight - will have to be strengthened in the light of current events.

British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home said he "was disgusted" when he heard the news. The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mohammed Hassan El-Zayyat, in London for talks with the British Government, expressed his sorrow at the bombing. Opposition Labour Party Leader Harold Wilson, the former Prime Minister, described the attack as "murderous and outrageous". Prime Minister Edward Heath is in Japan, and reports of his reaction have not yet been made public.

SYNOPSIS: The Israeli Embassy in London, where a bomb explosion killed an agricultural attache on Tuesday. The bomb was posted from Amsterdam in a booby - trapped letter personally addressed to Dr. Ami Sachori. When he opened it in this office, it exploded, injuring him in the stomach and chest. He died on his way to hospital. Also injured - but only slightly - the man who was to take over the office next week, when Dr. Sachori was due to return home to Israel after four years in London
Dr. Sachori staggered down the stairs, trailing blood, before collapsing. The forty-year-old dead man was married, with two children. Embassy sources are reported to have said that the letter probably got past security checks amid the mail which had piled up over the Yom Kippur religious holiday.

Later, three more bomb letters were reported to have been found among the Embassy mail - one of them addressed to Ambassador Michael Comay - the other two to senior officials. One of the letters was also said to contain a note saying "we shall kill you wherever you are"......signed by the Black September organisation.....the group which claimed responsibility for the Munich killings of eleven Israeli Olympic athletes. As security tightens around the Embassy, condemnations of the bombing poured in from British and other diplomatic sources - including Egyptian foreign Minister El-Zayyat, currently in London for official talks.
