  • Description

Thousands of members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, People's Party of India marched on Sunday (25 August) towards the home of the Indian Interior Minister, Mr, Umar Shankar Dikshit to protest against rising prices.

The demonstrators were prevented from reaching the house by a strong cordon of police. But the demonstrators broke through the cordon after a scuffle with police, and nearly 500 were arrested.

They brought a memorandum which claimed that the youth of India were slowly losing faith in their future and were feeling angry, frustrated and helpless.

The memorandum called on the Government to drastically curtail expenditure and even cut their personal spending as a good example.

The demonstrators were also protesting about youth unemployment and the current rise in railway fares.

On the 27th anniversary of Indian independence earlier this month, Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi appealed to her people to cooperate in combating the worst economic crisis the state has had to face.

"I'm painted and worried at heart and I am aware of your problems created by high prices and shortage of essential commodities", she said then.

At 3 rupees a kilo (8p.) the price of rice in West Bengal exceeds the daily wage of he landless -- who are a third of he state's population.

Inflation in India is now running at around 28 per cent a year.

The People's Party of India has 1,500,000 members and 22 seats in the Lower House of Parliament. It is a humanist party, anti marxist and pro democracy and nationalism.
