  • Description

THE JAPAN-UNITED STATES MUTUAL SECURITY TREATY SIGNED FIVE YEARS AGO AMIDST STUDENT DISTURBANCES WAS RECALLED BY SOME ONE THOUSAND JAPANESE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ON TUESDAY (JUNE 15), WITH A DEMONSTRATION. THE STUDENTS POURED INTO THE STREETS FROM THE HIBIYA PARK IN CENTRAL TOKYO SHOUTING ANTI-AMERICAN AND KOREAN SLOGANS AFTER COMMEMORATING THE DEATH OF ONE OF THEIR COLLEAGUES -- MISS MICHIKO KAMBA -- WHO WAS KILLED DURING THE DISTURBANCES.

DURING THE JUNE 15, 1960 STUDENT DISTURBANCES IN PROTEST AGAINST THE SIGNING OF THE TREATY, MANY STUDENTS WERE KILLED IN CLASHES WITH THE POLICE. AMONG THEM WAS MISS KAMBA, WHO WAS THEN 18 YEARS OLD.

IN TUESDAY'S DEMONSTRATION, THE STUDENTS SHOUTED ANTI-AMERICAN AND KOREAN SLOGANS IN FRONT OF THE JAPANESE DIET (PARLIAMENT) BUILDING. SEVERAL PLACARDS ALSO CALLED ON THE UNITED STATES TO STAY OUT OF VIETNAM; AND THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT NOT TO CONCLUDE NORMALISATION TALKS WITH SOUTH KOREA. ABOUT 1,500 STEEL-HELMETED POLICE WHO WERE ALERTED IN ADVANCE, BROKE UP THE DEMONSTRATION AND ARRESTED SEVERAL STUDENTS.
