Background: INTRODUCTION: The President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, has said satisfactory outcome, from Iraq's point of view, of the six-month war with Iran is a "foregone conclusion"; and that Iraq would supply arms to Iran's dissident minorities unless the Iranian government agreed to a ceasefire.

President Hussein was speaking on Saturday (14 March), at a farewell parade for the latest batch of auxiliary militiamen, who were about to leave for the fighting front.

He had a special greeting for small sons and young brothers of the soldiers, who had come to see them off.

The war is being fought in Iran's south-western province, Khuzestan, where most of the people are Arabs; and Iraq has consistently backed their separatist demands. Now, President Hussein has said he is ready to back - with "guns and other things" the Iranian Kurds, Baluchis, Azerbaijanis and other peoples who have shown dissatisfaction under the central regime in Teheran. President Hussein declared that time was running out for a peace settlement before Iraqi forces seized more territory. He said: "We knew that we would be victorious, and with God's will, we shall continue to be victorious".
