  • Description

Film has reached us from Moscow of the end of the world Chess Championship match between the two Russian players Vassily Smyslov and Michael Botvinnik. The final game took place in the Concert Hall of the Sovetskaya Hotel. Here is Botvinnik during play.

And here's Symslov to whom he lost last year.

Every move is recorded on a huge chess board, and the people watching the game also work out the possible moves for themselves. The scenes in the hall show the extraordinary appeal chess has for the Russians.

Here's the last move being registered as the players rise after a match in which Botvinnik's superiority was more marked than the score shows. He won by two games and so recaptured the title he had previously held for nine years. In the packed hall Botvinnik got a hero's reception; a laurel wreath and the gold medal of the world championship.
