  • Description

Three Palestine Liberation Organisation (P.L.O) buildings in Beirut -- including its Lebanese headquarters -- were attacked by rockets on Tuesday (10 December).

They were hit by a total of 18 delayed-action missiles fired in salvoes from parked cars.

The main PLO office, on a busy street, was hit by 10 rockets fired in two bursts half an hour apart. A PLO spokesman said this showed that the aim was to kill Palestinian leaders.

The other targets were the PLO's Palestine research centre and a suburban branch office.

The Israelis have been accused of organising the operation in revenge for recent Palestinian commando activities inside Israel. But the Israelis have refused to comment on the incident.

SYNOPSIS: The Palestine Liberation Organisation's Research Centre in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, was one of three PLO buildings attacked by rockets on Tuesday. The rockets were fired by timing devices from inside wooden boxes mounted on the roofs of three small saloon cars parked nearby.

PLO's headquarters for Lebanon was also the target for the attack. The headquarters was hit by ten rockets fired in two bursts, half an hour apart. A PLO spokesman said this shoed that the aim was to kill Palestinian leaders. The other target was a suburban branch office. Eyewitnesses said at least two men were lightly cut by flying debris ... but no serious injuries were reported. Windows, filing cabinets and office furniture were smashed. A total of eighteen delayed-action missiles were fired.

Later, a PLO spokesman said preliminary investigation revealed that the cars were hired by four people. These four appeared to be carrying what seemed to be German, British, Irish and Mexican passports. The spokesman said they left Lebanon some time before the explosions and that investigations were continuing.

The Palestinians are blaming Israel for the attack. They accuse the Israelis of organising the operation in reprisal for recent Palestinian Commando activities inside Israel. Israeli radio. on the other hand, suggested that the attacks might have been carried out by a dissident Arab guerrilla organisation, possibly the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
