  • Description

An estimated 20,000 people took part in the fourth Kenya Freedom From Hunger Development Walk in Nairobi on Saturday (19 May).

Proceeds form the walk, pledged by sponsors for each mile covered, were to benefit the Kenya Freedom from Hunger Council for National Development.

The walk covered 40 kilometres (25 miles) and started early in the morning so that competitors could complete it by nightfall.

Among those who walked was the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Jeremiah Nyagah and several other government officials.

For the first time, horses entered the marathon. Provided by the Jockey Club, the horses were ridden by Nairobi schoolchildren.

President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta sent a message to the walkers as they began the Nairobi walk and others like it all across the country aimed at raising funds for the continued work of the hunger council.

He said the walk was a simple and convincing means of focusing public attention to some particular human need -- such as the famine relief operations and efforts to ensure adequate water supplies by the council.

President Kenyatta said the council could look back proudly on its eight years of work of Kenya's betterment.
