  • Description

About 3,000 students and others demonstrating against the Vietnam war battled with police wielding truncheons outside the United States Consulate in Munich, West Germany, last night (Monday).

The demonstrators broke through one police barrier near the Consulate after a three-hour rally in one of Munich's famous beer-halls. But they were finally turned back by 200 police and five alsation dogs.

Students milled around the Consulate chanting such slogans as "bomb Johnson" and "killer L.B.J.". Homebound theatre traffic on one of Munich's main roads was jammed for more than a mile (1.6 kms).

At least a dozen students, three of them girls, were carried away bleeding. Several policemen were scratched and kicked in the clashes but none was reported seriously hurt.

Police said five young men had been arrested but it had not been decided whether charges would be brought against them.
