    Preparations for the Apollo 17 moon mission, scheduled for take-off from Cape Kennedy on December 6, have included recent training flights aboard a lunar landing simulator for mission commander Eugene Cernan. The veteran astronaut, aged 40, has spent 264 hours in space on two flights -- one of which, Apollo 10 in 1969, brought him to within eight miles (13 kilometres) of the moon's surface. The next mission -- the last of the United States' manned exploration of the moon -- will be Cernan's first lunar landing, and mankind's sixth.

    SYNOPSIS: Eugene Cernan, the forty-year-old veteran astronaut who will lead the United States' last manned lunar mission aboard Apollo 17 in December, spent some time recently practising aboard a lunar landing simulator at an airforce base in Texas.

    The simulator is designed to behave like the real thing, which will take Cernan onto the moon for the first time in his career as an astronaut. He's already spent two-hundred-and-sixty-four hours in space. On one mission, Apollo 10 in 1969, he came within eight miles of the moon's surface.

    With Cernan on the moon's surface with be fellow-astronaut and geologise Harrison Schmitt. The third crew member will be command-ship pilot Ronald Evans.
