  • Description

At Sittendorf, Lower Austria, Apr 24, a crowd of 30,000 watched the opening event of this year' motocross world championship.

Danish and German riders were slow in the two 15-lap spins, and British favourite Don Rickman, No 8, was out with engine trouble after the seventh lap.

With the field drawn for apart, the event turned into a neck-and-neck fight between Swedish riders Rolf Tibblin, No 14, last year's European champion, and Sten Lundin, No , world champion 1959. At the end of lap 15, Lundin finished close behind Tibblin. But in the second half of the race Lundin retired with engine trouble, after ten laps, and the road was clear for Tibblin who won the race with 8 points.

Second was Bill Nilson of Sweden, No 3, with 6 points. Rene Beaten of Belgium, No 2, took third place with 4 points.
