  • Description

IN ROME, THE 2,000 CARDINALS AND BISHOPS ARE ARRIVING FROM ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD, FOR THE SECOND SESSION OF THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL, WHICH POPE PAUL VI WILL OPEN IN ST.PETER'S BASILICA ON SUNDAY.

IN GENERAL, THE COUNCIL IS EXPECTED TO FOLLOW THE LINE SET BY POPE JOHN AT THE FIRST SESSION, BUT THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT REVISIONS TO THE AGENDA AND THE PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED.MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT THE COUNCIL'S DELIBERATIONS WILL BE MADE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY OF THE ROMAN CHURCH.PLANS HAVE BEEN MADE TO SPEED UP AND LIBERALISE DEBATE SO AS TO GIVE MINORITY VIEWS MORE CHANCE OF BEING HEARD.THE POPE HAS ALSO APPOINTED FOUR CARDINALS TO ACT AS HIS PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVES AT ALL COUNCIL MEETINGS.

THE SECOND SESSION IS EXPECTED TO END ON DECEMBER 8TH, AND VATICAN EXPERTS PREDICT THAT THE FOURTH WILL OPEN IN AUTUMN OF 1965.
