Two Rhodesian nationalist leaders, Mr. Joshua Nkomo and Mr. Robert Mugabe of the Patriotic Front, arrived in London on Monday (March 13) for talks on Rhodesia with the British Foreign Secretary Dr. David Owen. Later, Dr. Owen appealed to all sides in the Rhodesian dispute to come together. The only alternative was continued racial conflict, he warned.
SYNOPSIS: The two nationalist leaders went to Foreign Office in the afternoon to tell Dr. Owen why the Patriotic Front is unable to accept Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith's majority rules agreement, and why they are reluctant to join other nationalists in a new conference suggested by United Sates President Jimmy Carter
The talks lasted for two hours and were due to continue the following afternoon. Afterwards Mr. Mugabe said he thought Britain was drifting towards the internal settlement and away from the Anglo-American initiative. Dr. Owen told the Patriotic Front leaders he thinks the settlement is good in parts. Mr. Mugabe explained why even these parts weren't acceptable to him.
