SYNOPSIS: The seventh World Aerobatics Championships are being held this month near Marseilles in southern France.
The event, which is held every two years, is also known as the Olympics of the Air.
The world aerobatics title is presently held by a team form the United States, which won it in England two years ago. It was the first time that a team form a non-Communist country had won it.
The championships were first held in nineteen-sixty. This year, sixteen nations are taking part.
It is a spectacular event with pilots putting their specially-built 'planes through the most heart stopping manoeuvres sometimes only a matter of feet above the ground.
All of the teams have been practising for months to get up to the necessary standard. Nor is aerobatics a cheep spot, and the money needed to take part is not always easy to raise.
The United States team, for instance, was not supported by the US Olympics organisation. the team had to fly in air shows in america to raise funds to defend its title. The Americans fly an aircraft known as the Pitts Special. Many aviation experts consider it to be the ultimate in a sports flying machine.
In practice for this year's Olympics of the Air, the team form the Soviet Union showed it would be a considerable threat to the Americans.
