  • Description

THE MALAYSIAN CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IN ITS FIRST POST-MALAYSIA CRACK-DOWN AGAINST PRO-COMMUNISTS ARRESTED MORE THAN 20 NANYANG UNIVERSITY AND CHINESE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN POLICE SWOOPS EARLY SEPTEMBER 26 MORNING WAKING STUDENTS IN THEIR DORMITORIES.

POLICE BATTLED WITH THE STUDENTS, WHO USED BOTTLES, STICKS AND STONES.SEVERAL STUDENTS WHO SUSTAINED MULTIPLE HEAD INJURIES WERE TREATED AT THE GENERAL HOSPITAL WHILE OTHERS BY PRIVATE DOCTORS SUMMONED BY STUDENTS TO THE CAMPUS.

AMONG THE ARRESTED STUDENTS WERE TWO BARISAN SOCIALIST CANDIDATES; WHO WERE DEFEATED IN THE SEPTEMBER 21 GENERAL ELECTION IN WHICH THE PEOPLE'S ACTION PARTY WON 37 OF THE 51 ASSEMBLY SEATS, BARISAN SOCIALIST 13 AND THE UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY ONE.

AT AN EMERGENCY MEETING CALLED BY THE STUDENTS UNION WHICH WAS HELD INSIDE THE UNIVERSITY CANTEEN, THE 1,200 STUDENTS ATTENDED DECIDED TO SEND A CABLE TO THE WORLD'S STUDENTS BODY IN PRAGUE AND TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, PROTESTING AGAINST THE ARRESTS.

MOST OF THE STUDENTS AT THE MEETING SAT SOLEMNLY WITH THEIR HEADS BOWED AS THEY LISTENED TO SPEECHES AFTER SPEECHES DELIVERED BY UNION LEADERS.SOME OF THEIR CLOTHES WERE SOAKED WITH BLOOD WHILE OTHERS WITH BANDAGED HEADS - INJURIES SUSTAINED IN THE SCUFFLE.

MEANWHILE, BEHIND THE LOCKED CAMPUS GATES, SOME STUDENTS PREPARED COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA AND ANTI-GOVERNMENT POSTERS AND SLOGANS WHICH THEY LATER PASTERED ONTO BUSES AND OTHER PRIVATE VEHICLE WHICH WENT TO THE CAMPUS TO COLLECT THE DAY STUDENTS NOT KNOWING THAT THERE WERE NO CLASSES.

POLICEMEN AT A POLICE STATION QUARTER MILE AWAY FROM THE UNIVERSITY, HOWEVER, STOPPED THESE VEHICLES AND RIPPED OFF THE POSTERS AND BURNED THEM.THEY ALSO SEARCHED THE VEHICLES FOR POSSIBLE COMMUNIST DOCUMENTS.

A STATEMENT ISSUED IN KUALA LUMPUR AND SIGNED BY THE MINISTER OF INTERNAL SECURITY SAID THAT THE ARRESTS WERE MADE TO DISRUPT THE SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITY OF SOME LEADERS BOTH IN NANYANG UNIVERSITY AND CHINESE MIDDLE SCHOOLS WHO WERE ACTIVELY SUPPORTING THE COMMUNIST UNITED FRONT.

IT POINTED OUT THAT THE FAILURE OF THE COMMUNISTS TO CAPTURE POWER IN SINGAPORE ON SEPTEMBER 21 BY MEANS OF ELECTIONS HAS FOILED THEIR PLANS TO SET UP A COMMUNIST STATE IN SINGAPORE.
