  • Description

In Pakistan, Kuwait's ambassador, Mr. ahmad Abdul Aziz Al-Jassim, has called on the President, General Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq. Mr. Jassim is leaving his post in Rawalpindi, and was paying his final courtesy call to General Zia.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting between General Zia and the Kuwaiti Ambassador took place at the President's resident in the capital, Rawalpindi.

Pakistan, with its strong Moslem identity and legal system, has much in common with many Arab countries. And relations are cooling with the West over the issue of the manufacture of a nuclear bomb. According to London's Financial Times, Pakistan might be able to detonate a uranium device in less than two years and acquire a weapon within three to five years. There are fears that Pakistan might trade an "Islamic bomb" with its Arab neighbours and so threaten Israel.

Pakistani foreign affairs officials Mr. Agha Shahi and Mr. Shah Nawaz also met the departing ambassador.
