    HMAS SUBMARINE OVENS (1,610 TONS) ARRIVED IN THE PORT OF LONDON TODAY OF START AN OPERATIONAL VISIT WHICH ENDS ON AUGUST THE 1ST AS THE END OF HER POST-COMMISSIONING WORK-UP IN THE CLYDE. IT IS THE FIRST EVER VISIT TO LONDON BY AN AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINE AND IS THE FIRST VISIT BY AN AUSTRALIAN WARSHIP SINCE 1955.

    OVENS IS THE THIRD OF FOUR OBERON-CLASS SUBMARINES BUILT FOR THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY IN GREENOCK, SCOTLAND. THE SUBMARINE OXLEY AND OTWAY ARE ALREADY IN SERVICE AND THE FOURTH, ONSLOW, IS DUE TO BE COMMISSIONED AT GREENOCK AT THE END OF THE YEAR.

    THE SUBMARINE'S COMMANDING OFFICER IS LIEUTENANT-COMMANDER BARRY HOBES. A FORMER ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINER WHO TRANSFERRED TO THE RAN IN 1966.

    OVENS' COMPANY OF SEVEN OFFICERS AND 55 MAN ARE DRAWN FROM THE AUSTRALIAN STATES, AND ABOUT 20 PER CENT OF THEM HAVE MARRIED LOCAL GIRLS DURING THEIR SERVICE AND TRAINING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
    AT THE END OF THE LONDON VISIT, OVENS WILL SAIL FOR AUSTRALIA AND WILL JOIN THE AUSTRALIAN FLEET IN OCTOBER.
