Background: Syria took advantage of a penalty int he closing minutes of its World Soccer Cup qualifying match at Teheran on Friday (4 May) to defeat the Kuwait team by two goals to one.

The Syrian win capped a comeback after Kuwait were leading on a Syrian penalty.

A crowd of 75,000 crowded Aryamehr Stadium to see Syria and Kuwait battle for the lead in the Asian Zone Group B eliminations. The winners of the Teheran qualifying round will go on to play Australia (winner of Asian group B1) for the right to represent Asia at the Munich World Cup finals later this year.

The first score of the game came after a foul on Kuwait's Goreard Hamad was converted by centre-half Ibrahim Duraihim in the 57th minute. Syria matched that goal with one headed into Kuwait's net by J. Shahrestan five minutes later.

The winning goal was scored by Syria's Nabil Nano from the penalty spot after 65 minutes of play.

The Syria-Kuwait match proved to be the top of the day's play. A game between Iran (the host country) and North Korea drew 0-0.
