  • Description

THE GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. CHRISTOS PALAMAS, SAID IN ATHENS TODAY (SATURDAY), THAT THERE HAD BEEN NO PROSPECT OF INTERVENTION BY NATO TO SETTLE THE CYPRUS CRISIS. HE WAS COMMENTING ON A MESSAGE SENT YESTERDAY TO THE LEADERS OF BRITAIN, AMERICA, FRANCE, TURKEY AND GREECE BY MR. KHRUSHCHEV, WHO ACCUSED THE WEST OF TRYING TO ORGANISE "MILITARY INTERVENTION" IN CYPRUS.

MR. PALAMAS SAID THAT THE FACT THAT A GREAT POWER SUCH AS RUSSIA RECOGNISED THE JUST CAUSE OF CYPRUS WAS "A POSITIVE ELEMENT", BUT HE SAID THAT THERE WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING IN THE SOVIET LEADER'S REPRESENTATION OF FACTS. HE ADDED THAT THERE HAD BEEN NO INTERVENTION BY BRITAIN IN CYPRUS, AS BRITISH FORCES WERE THERE TO KEEP THE PEACE AT THE REQUEST OF THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT.

IN THE MEANTIME, TENSION REMAINS HIGH ON THE ISLAND REPUBLIC FOLLOWING THURSDAY'S ATTACK BY GREEKS ON THE TURKISH VILLAGE OF SOZOMENOS, IN WHICH 11 PEOPLE WERE KILLED.

THE POPULATION OF SOZOMENOS TOOK ONLY THEIR MOST PORTABLE OF POSSESSIONS - LOADING THEM TO DONKEYS, A TRUCK AND A TRACTOR-DRAWN TRAILER. THEY ALSO CARRIED WITH THEM THE BODIES OF FOUR TURKS WHO DIED IN THURSDAY'S FIGHTING -- THE BODIES BEING PLACED IN THE LURIGINIA MOSQUE TO AWAIT BURIAL.

WITHIN THE PAST WEEK, 500 REFUGEES FROM TURKISH VILLAGES IN KYRENIA REGION HAVE ARRIVED IN LURIGINIA TO SWELL THE POPULATION TO MORE THAN 3 THOUSAND. BRITISH OFFICIALS SAY THAT WITH SUCH A LARGE CONCENTRATION OF TURKISH-CYPRIOTS IN THE VILLAGE, GREEK CYPRIOTS ARE UNLIKELY TO LAUNCH ATTACKS.

IN THE MEANTIME, 550 BRITISH TROOPS HAVE ARRIVED IN CYPRUS TODAY FROM MALTA TO EASE THE BURDEN ON THE BRITISH UNITS ON DAY AND NIGHT PEACE-KEEPING DUTIES SINCE CHRISTMAS. A MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THE REINFORCEMENTS DID NOT MEAN THE NUMBER OF BRITISH TROOPS ENGAGED OPERATIONALLY ON THE ISLAND WOULD INCREASE. THEIR ARRIVAL WOULD GIVE THE OTHER MEN A REST FROM THE "FOUR HOURS ON, FOUR HOURS OFF", ROUTINE.
