Background: If the Cambodian Government is to win the struggle against North Vietnamese Communists, control of Highway Four, vital link between Phnom Penh and the sea, is essential.

Yesterday (Sunday January 17), the hard-pressed Cambodian troops were spurred on by a morale-boosting successful fight as far as the entrance of Pich Nil pass -- in Communist hands for the last two months. A harassing mortar attack and sporadic small arms fire failed to arrest the Cambodians. Meanwhile, latest reports say the Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces are well entrenched in positions along the pass.

So control of Highway Four remains the prime objective of the Cambodians. About 13,500 Cambodian and South Vietnamese troops, supported By tanks, are making the joint thrust to penetrate beyond their present position at the entrance to the vital pass. During the offensive, supported by air bombing by Phantom jets, at least one Vietcong bunker -- complete with rice supplies and arms -- was found.
