Background: THE GHANIAN COMMISSIONER FOR FINANCE, BRIGADIER A.A. AFRIFA ANNOUNCED ON WEDNESDAY AN INCREASE IN THE PRICE PAID TO GHANA COCOA FARMERS, BY THE STATE MARKETING COMPANY.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON ACCRA, BRIGADIER AFRIFA, SAID THE PRODUCER PRICE WOULD BE RAISED BY ONE CEDI TO EIGHT NEW CEDIS PER 60 LB HEADLOAD, STARTING WITH THE 1969 MID-CROP SEASON.

A GUARANTEED MINIMUM PRICE OF SIX NEW CEDIS, FIRST INTRODUCED IN 1968, WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE.

WITH THE BRIGADIER WERE THE COMMISSIONER FOR ECONOMICS AFFAIRS, MR. OMABOE AND THE PRINCIPAL SECRETARY OF THE BUDGET DIVISION OF THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE, DR. AMOI NIKOI.

BRIGADIER AFRIFA SAID THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE NEW MEASURE WAS TO MAKE LIFE ON COCOA FARMS MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN IT IS NOW BY HELPING THE COCOA FARMER TO COVER HIS RISING PRODUCTION COSTS AND STILL LEAVE HIM A REASONABLE SURPLUS.

MR. OMABOE SAID THERE WAS NO TRUTH IN RUMOURS THAT THE CEDI WOULD BE DEVALUED AGAIN. HE POINTED OUT THAT THE CEDI WAS DEVALUED IN 1967 BECAUSE AT THE TIME IT WAS FELT THAT DEVALUATION COULD HELP THE ECONOMY.
