  • Description

MICHEL JAZY, THE CHAMPION FRENCH RUNNER, SET TWO EUROPEAN RECORDS LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY): THE THREE MILES AND 5,000 METRES. HE WAS RUNNING IN THE 5,000 METRES AT THE WORLD GAMES IN HELSINKI, WHICH HE WON FROM KENYA'S KIPCHOGE KIENO AND THE AUSTRALIAN WORLD RECORD-HOLDER, RON CLARKE.

THE RACE WAS EXPECTED TO HAVE BEEN A DUEL BETWEEN JAZY AND CLARKE. THE MELBOURNE RUNNER SET MOST OF THE PACE WITH JAZY AND KIENO CLOSE BEHIND. A LAP TO GO, JAZY AND KIENO OVERTOOK THE TIRING CLARKE TO FIGHT IT OUT. BUT AT THE FINISH THE FRENCH STAR'S STAMINA WAS THE TELLING FACTOR.

JAZY'S TIME OF 13 MINUTES 27.6 SECONDS WAS 1.4 SECONDS BETTER THAN THE EUROPEAN RECORD HE HIMSELF SET THREE WEEKS AGO, AND 1.8 SECONDS OUTSIDE CLARKE'S WORLD RECORD. HE ALSO LOWERED THE EUROPEAN THREE-MILE BEST BY 0.6 SECONDS TO 13 MINUTES 4.8 SECONDS.

KIENO CAME SECOND IN 13 MINUTES 28.2 SECONDS, MORE THAN A SECOND AHEAD OF CLARKE WHOSE TIME WAS 13 MINUTES 29.4 SECONDS.

(OTHER RUNNERS IN THE FIELD INCLUDED AMERICA'S OLYMPIC MEDALLISTS, BILLY MILLS AND BOB SCHUL, AND NEW ZEALAND'S BILL BAILLE).
