The new United States Secretary of State, Mr. Cyrus Vance, arrived in Egypt on Thursday?
The new United States Secretary of State, Mr. Cyrus Vance, arrived in Egypt on Thursday (17 February) for talks with President Anwar Sadat on prospects for a Middle East peace settlement. Mr. Vance has described his current Middle East tour as a "fact-finding mission", although he has admitted that his aim is to bring the Arabs and Israelis back to the Geneva Peace Conference table by the end of the year.
SYNOPSIS: When Mr. Vance and his delegation arrived in Cairo, they were greeted by the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr. Ismail Fahmy. Mr. Vance had flown from Israel, which had been the first stop on his Middle East trip. He had said that while in Egypt he planned to explore the implications of recent reports suggesting that the leaders of the Palestine Liberation Organisation were considering the idea of a Palestinian ministate on the West Bank of the Jordan and the Gaza strip.
After the official welcoming ceremony, Mr. Vance held an impromptu news conference on the runway.
