  • Description

Kennedy Round negotiators were hopeful of final agreement in Geneva today (Monday) on a package deal to slash tariff barriers and other restrictions affecting four-fifths of the world's trade. Their original midnight deadline for clinching the deal came and went last night with top-level discussions, particularly on a world food aid programme, still unfinished.

The negotiators were expected to resume their full session this afternoon to endorse agreements thrashed out in bilateral talks overnight.

The fact that the self-imposed midnight deadline had been passed was seen only as a technical matter and optimism was high that general accord was in sight after the intense bargaining of recent weeks.

The first real break-through in the final bargaining sessions came yesterday (Sunday) when negotiators agreed on fixing a new minimum world wheat price of 1.37 dollars (12 shillings and threepence sterling) a bushel.

Later today it was reported that negotiators had been given a compromise package deal for ending the talks. It was thought that delegates were studying the proposals aimed at bridging outstanding differences. These include the controversial tariff cuts on chemicals and steel.
