    THE UNIT, EXCHANGED EVERY TWO MONTHS OVER THE 176-KILOMETRE LONG (110 MILE) EAST GERMAN AUTOBAHN, WAS FIRST SENT TO BERLIN BY THE LATE PRESIDENT KENNEDY AFTER EAST GERMANY BUILT THE BERLIN WALL.

    THE WITHDRAWAL WAS DECIDED ON LAST NOVEMBER AS PART OF A REC-ORGANISATION OF THE US FORCES IN EUROPE.

    THE DEPARTURE OF THE 700 MEN -- MOST OF WHOM WILL LEAVE WEST BERLIN BY TRAIN TONIGHT -- WILL RETURN THE PERMANENT STRENGTH OF US FORCES IN WEST BERLIN TO 6,000. THREE THOUSAND BRITISH AND 2,000 FRENCH TROOPS ARE ALSO STATIONED IN WEST BERLIN.
