  • Description

In the Chilean capital of Santiago the National congress, including both senators and representatives, is due to meet on Saturday (October the 24th) to select the country's new President.

The man everybody expects to be elected is Senor Salvador Allende. If congress does appoint him he will be the first Marxist to be elected to power in Latin America.

Saturday's meeting of the Congress and election of the president is a constitutional procedure made necessary because none of the candidates in the presidential election held on September the 4th gained an absolute majority. Senor Allende received the most votes of the three candidates.

The Christian Democrat Party, which holds the balance of power on the Chilean Parliament, has instructed its 75 senators and deputies to vote for Senor allende on Saturday -- virtually assuring him of election, for the six-year period from November 4th.

Allende says one of his main aims is to recover for Chile the riches allegedly now in the hands of foreigners. He says he wants cordial relations with Washington.
