    DISTURBANCES FOLLOWING THE INTRODUCTION OF HINDI, SPOKEN MAINLY IN NORTHERN INDIA, AS THE NATION'S OFFICIAL LANGUAGE, HAVE LEFT A TOLL OF MORE THAN 60 DEAD IN SOUTHERN INDIA.

    THE CENTRE OF THE RIOTING HAS BEEN IN MADRAS.TROOPS WERE BROUGHT IN TO REINFORCE POLICE.ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS THEY FIRED INTO CROWDS OF DEMONSTRATORS.

    AT PATTABHIRAM, ABOUT 20 MILES FROM MADRAS, A CROWD OF ABOUT TEN THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHERED ON FRIDAY.THEY HELD UP AN INCOMING MAIL TRAIN AND SET FIRE TO FOUR CARRIAGES.THE POLICE FIRED TWICE ON THE CROWD TO CLEAR THE TRAIN.

    LATER TROOPS FIRED AGAIN WHEN THE CROWD TURNED ON THE STATION ITSELF, AND TRIED TO BURN IT DOWN.ONE PERSON DIED, AND AT LEAST EIGHT WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED.ALL TRAINS DUE TO LEAVE MADRAS THAT NIGHT WERE CANCELLED IN AN EFFORT TO PREVENT A REPEAT OF THE RIOT.

    (ON SATURDAY, MRS INDIRA GANDHI, MINISTER FOR INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING, TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE REASON FOR MAKING HINDI THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE WAS TO PROMOTE NATIONAL INTEGRATION."BUT IF WE FAIL TO DO THIS, WE MAY HAVE TO DO SOME RETHINKING ABOUT IT," SHE SAID.
