    THE OLD EUROPEAN RECORD WAS HELD BY WITOLD BARAN OF POLAND WHO FINISHED THIRD. (BARAN SET HIS RECORD OF 3.56.0 IN 1964). JEAN WADOUX OF FRANCE WAS SECOND IN 3.57.2.

    GERALD VERVOORT SET A FIERCE PACE FOR THE QUARTER MILE, THEN DROPPED BACK. JAZY WAS IN SEVENTH PLACE WHEN HE BROKE AWAY FROM THE PACK ABOUT 300 YARDS BEFORE THE FINISH AND RAN ALONE TO THE TAPE.

    THE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT 61 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT (ABOUT 16 DEGREES CENTIGRADE) AND WIND WAS NEGLIGIBLE.
