  • Description

ONLY 50 PEOPLE - INCLUDING A SOLITARY WOMAN - OBEYED A CALL FROM THE NEW DELHI BRANCH OF THE INDIAN COMMUNIST PARTY TO DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE THE DUTCH EMBASSY, JANUARY 22, IN SUPPORT OF INDONESIA'S CLAIM TO WEST NEW GUINEA. BANNERS CARRIED SUCH DEMANDS AS "DUTCH IMPERIALISTS QUIT WEST IRIAN". (WEST IRIAN IS THE NAME GIVEN TO WEST NEW GUINEA BY INDONESIA).

OUTSIDE THE EMBASSY, THE DEMONSTRATORS SHOUTED SLOGANS AGAINST THE DUTCH; AND LATER THREE OF THEM WERE ALLOWED INSIDE TO HAND OVER A PROTEST NOTE. THIS CLAIMED: "WEST IRIAN IS AS MUCH A PART OF INDONESIA AS GOA IS OF INDIA". THE NOTE SAID THAT "DUTCH COLONISTS HAVE CONTINUED IN THEIR ILLEGAL AND FORCIBLE OCCUPATION OF WEST IRIAN".

AND IT ADDED: "NO AMOUNT OF TRICKERY CAN STOP THE MARCH OF HISTORY - THE LIBERATION OF COLONIAL PEOPLES FROM IMPERIALIST SLAVERY. WE DEMAND OF THE DUTCH GOVERNMENT TO RESTORE WEST IRIAN PEACEFULLY TO INDONESIA." THE INDIAN COMMUNISTS SAID THAT INDONESIA WOULD BE JUSTIFIED IN USING FORCE - IF NECESSARY - TO "BRING BACK WEST IRIAN TO ITS FOLD".
