  • Description

The first race in the 1974 Cyclo-Cross International Trophy competition -- held in the United Kingdom on Sunday (13 October) -- was won by top British rider Jeff Morris.

Second and third Places went to the British riders Keith Mernikle and John Atkins.

Atkins has won the League Competition for the last three years.

Belgian riders were expected to feature strongly in Sunday's race, but they only managed fourth and fifth place with Camille De Decker and Hubert De Meulemeester respectively.

The winner of the International Cyclo-Cross League Trophy will be decided on the results of five events -- the last being held in Birmingham in February next year.

The sport is a mixture of cycling and cross-country running with the riders dismounting at obstacles or steep hills and running -- carrying their 'cycles on their shoulders.
