  • Description

The People's Republic of China celebrated its reappearance in international athletics with a dazzling gold medal win on the first day of the track and field events of the seventh Asian Games in the Iranian capital, Teheran on Monday (9 September).

As the title holder in the women's 1500 metres, Israel's Hana Shezifi, tired towards the end, in a sudden burst of speed, Sung Mei-hua followed by Yang Yen-ying, sprinted form behind to collect the gold and the silver medals. Sung Mei-hua's winning time was 4 mins 28.68 secs.

In the other major event of the day - the Men's 4x100 metre relay - excellent baton-passing and timing by the four-man team from Thailand won them the gold and a new Games record of 40.14 secs for the event.

Significantly China took second place only 0.06 of a second behind. China also took a second gold medal in the badminton competitions. It was a brilliant start for China's sportsmen and women in the first big international multi-sporting event that China had taken part in for eight years. It followed the decision of the Asian Games Federation (AGF) last November to admit China in place of Taiwan.

But political rows, of a different nature, still surrounded the Chinese athletes.

China is supporting the policy of the Arab nations, Iraq and Kuwait, in refusing to meet Israel in individual sports where there is face-to-face competition, or in team events where there is physical contact.

The Israelis mixed doubles pair in the tennis, Yair Wertheimer and Paulina Peisachev were due to meet the Chinese pair Wang Fu-Chang and Yen Ta-Lin and Chang Jung-Hua in the final - leading to a very easy gold medal for Israel.
