  • Description

Australia's twelve-day old nationwide petrol strike was due to end on Thursday (23 July). The stoppage by oil workers had brought traffic in the Eastern seaboard cities of Melbourne and Sydney almost to a standstill.

The strike, was over demands for a wage rise by transport workers in the oil industry.

While the strike was no, Sydney in particular, resembled a dead city. An estimated 70 percent of its private cars were off the road while public transport and taxies were seriously affected.

One or two stations were open, but only for essential workers such as doctors.

One benefit of the strike is that it has reduced air pollution and Sydney's skies have been their clearest for years.
