Background: Bloody fighting is continuing north of Phnom Penh as government troops and the Communists battle for control of the area around the provincial capital of Kompong Thom.
While the Cambodians occupy Kompong Thom, they have failed to reopen the road linking it with Phnom Penh as the Communists have blocked their advance.
As the Lon Nol regime pours more men into the battle, the refugees are pouring out to escape getting caught up in the crossfire. They have fled with everything they own except their houses.
Travellers are being stopped and searched.
Among the reinforcements on the government side have been women troops, including a mortar platoon. Buses were used to bring in fresh food and ammunition as the Cambodians tried to dislodge the Communists from Highway Six.
