  • Description

CARDINAL PAUL-EMILE LEGER, THE CANADIAN WHO GAVE UP HIS ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCH-DIOCESE IN MONTREAL TO SERVE THE LEPERS OF AFRICA, ARRIVED IN COTONOU, DAHOMEY, ON MONDAY (18 DECEMBER). THE CARDINAL, WHO IS 63, DOES NOT EXPECT TO RETURN TO CANADA.

ALTHOUGH THE CARDINAL HAD APPEALED TO PEOPLE TO ALLOW HIM TO TAKE UP HIS NEW LIFE WITHOUT ANY FUSS, HUNDREDS TURNED OUT TO GREET HIM AT THE AIRPORT -- THE COUNTRY'S LARGEST. MANY OF THEM WERE PRIESTS AND NUNS, WHO HAD TURNED OUT DESPITE TROOPS PLACED AT STRATEGIC POINTS ON STREET CORNERS AS THE COUNTRY WAS MERSED IN A MILITARY COUP.

CARDINAL LEGER IS EXPECTED TO SPEND CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR IN A ROMAN CATHOLIC COLLEGE AT PORTO NOVO, NOT FAR FROM THE AIRPORT, BEING BRIEFED BY EXPERIENCED AFRICAN MISSIONARIES ON THE PROBLEMS HE WILL FACE IN HIS NEW LIFE.

LATER HE WILL MAKE A TOUR OF THE WORST-HIT COUNTRIES IN WEST AFRICA, BEFORE DECIDING WHERE HIS HELP IS MOST NEEDED. WHEREVER THAT IS, HE IS UNLIKELY TO RETURN TO CANADA. BEFORE HE LEFT MONTREAL HE DECLARED "I LEAVE WITH A RESOLUTION NEVER TO COME BACK. I TELL YOU TO LOVE GOD AND LOVE ONE-ANOTHER."
