  • Description

The people of Beirut tried to return to normality on Monday (20 October) after fresh violence the previous night had broken the ceasefire and killed at least thirteen people.

The day before the renewed violence the streets of Beirut had been thronged with cars and people who were enjoying the unaccustomed luxury of being able to move about in public without taking the risk of being gunned down or shelled by one of the rival factions.

It is these factions -- the right wing Christians and the left wing Moslems -- who had previously made Beirut, and the rest of Lebanon, a wasted battle ground.

On Sunday (19 October) the last of the ceasefires that the Lebanese government had organised between the two sides appeared to be taking effect -- but then the events of the night which once more ruined everything.

A scheduled meeting to discuss ways and means of bringing the violence to a permanent and had to be postponed because of the renewed fighting.
