  • Description

Youths throughout Egypt have been celebrating the fifth anniversary of the government's crushing of an attempt to overthrow President Anwar Sadat.

The celebration marks the unmasking by President Sadat of a plot to overthrow him in 1971.

In Cairo, a procession of torch-bearing youths moved form district to district and held a rally afterwards in one of the main squares of the city.

Vice-President Hosni Mubarak, who addressed the rally, said the successful quashing of the attempted coup had ensured security for every citizen, as Egypt was now governed by "constitutional organisations".

He declared that the military achievement of Egypt in the 1973 war against Israel was the natural outcome of the so-called "May 15 Corrective Revolution" which "restored dignity to every Egyptian citizen".

Following the unmasking of the plot to overthrow him, President Sadat initiated a series of liberal measures.

He ordered an immediate halt to official eavesdropping on citizens and closed concentration camps for the first time in more than 40 years. He also laws ensuring that no Egyptian could be arrested without legal grounds.

SYNOPSIS: As the youths gathered in the square, it was announced that President Sadat received a telegram of support from Premier Mamduh Salem and his cabinet ministers. The telegram said the revolution would "guide the government in establishing a society of progress, justice and prosperity".
