Background: ....the Bung Karno Sports Stadium in Djakarta, Indonesia. The solemn ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of the Bandung conference was held here on April 18th.

The ceremony began with the chief delegate from 36 countries signing their names.

A speech was made by President Sukarno expressing his confidence in the sure defeat of the old established forces and the victory of the new emerging forces. Dien Bien Phu and Panmunjom, he said, served as a beckon light for the militant people fighting for independence. A people fighting for independence is invincible. He demanded that imperialism step out of South Vietnam and let the Vietnamese people settle their own problems. So long as imperialism existed, there could be no world peace. President Sukarno called on all brothers and sisters to devote their efforts to making the forthcoming second Afro-Asian Conference a success.

Premier Pham Van Dong of the Vietnam Democratic Republic denounced the US imperialism for extending their war of aggression to North Vietnam. The Vietnamese people were fighting back resolutely and heroically in defence of their country, he said. The Vietnamese Premier stressed that it was the consistent stand of Democratic Republic of Vietnam to strictly respect the 1954 Geneva Agreements and to demand the correct implementation of the Basic provisions of these agreements namely: withdrawal of US troops from South Vietnam, an and to the US aggression there and a stop to its war against North Vietnam.

The Cambodian head of state, Prince Norodom Sihanouk appealed to all the Afro-Asian countries and governments represented at the ceremony to conform with the example set by Indonesia and proclaim their total and unreserved support for the people of Vietnam.

The ceremony was also addressed by Vice-President Zakaria Mohieddin of the UAR; Vice-Premier Mohamed Said of Algeria; Information Minister Gologo of Mali; and Pakistan Foreign Minister Zulfigar Bhutto.
