Background: THREE HUNDRED AND SEVEN YEARS OF BRITISH RULE ENDED IN JAMAICA AT MIDNIGHT AUGUST FIVE AS PRINCESS MARGARET AND LORD SNOWDON JOINED A VAST AUDIENCE IN KINGSTON'S NATIONAL STADIUM TO SEE THE UNION JACK HAULED DOWN AND JAMAICA'S BLACK, GOLD AND GREEN FLAG RUN UP - THE COMMONWEALTH'S NEWEST MEMBER HAD BECOME INDEPENDENT.

THE PRINCESS, WHO WAS GREETED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, SIR ALEXANDER BUSTAMANTE, SAT BETWEEN HER HUSBAND AND THE ISLAND'S FIRST GOVERNOR-GENERAL, SIR KENNETH BLACKBURNE, DURING THE COLOURFUL CEREMONY. LATER, AS MUSIC MOUNTED TO A CRESCENDO, A SPOTLIGHT FLASHED ONTO A RUNNER BEARING THE NEW FLAG, ON THE LAST LAP OF A RELAY RUN AROUND THE ISLAND.

A GUARD OF HONOUR SALUTED THE UNION JACK AS THE AUDIENCE STOOD TO SING THE BRITISH NATIONAL ANTHEM. THE UNION JACK WAS LOWERED, THE NEW FLAG WAS RAISED, AND THE CHOIR SANG THEIR ANTHEM: "JAMAICA, LAND WE LOVE".

THEN FIREWORKS LIT THE SKY, BELLS PEALED IN ALL THE CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS OF JAMAICA'S 4,000 VILLAGES, AND BEACONS AND BONFIRES BLAZED FROM HILL AND MOUNTAIN TOP.

ON AUG 7, PRINCESS MARGARET FORMALLY OPENED THE FIRST SESSION OF JAMAICA'S NATIONAL PARLIAMENT. DURING HIS OFFICIAL ADDRESS, SIR ALEXANDER BUSTAMANTE MOVED A VOTE OF THANKS TO THE PRINCESS. HE THANKED BRITAIN FOR GUIDANCE OVER THE PAST 300 YEARS AND URGED JAMAICA TO UNITE.
